Top Row Keys: q w e r t y u i o p

The top row introduces five additional basic consonants on your left hand and five expressive vowels on your right hand. Reaching up smoothly from the home row allows you to expand your typing repertoire to cover many more syllables while maintaining balanced posture.

Top Row Consonants on the Left Hand

Your left hand reaches upward from the home row to type common Korean consonants. Reaching up with your little finger presses ㅂ on the Q key. Reaching up with your ring finger presses ㅈ on the W key. Your middle finger moves up to ㄷ on the E key. Your index finger handles two keys: reaching straight up to ㄱ on the R key, and reaching diagonally inward to ㅅ on the T key. Always remember to return each finger to its home position immediately after pressing.

Because consonants like ㄱ and ㅅ appear with very high frequency in written Korean, developing precise reach motions with your index finger is crucial. Practice shifting the finger smoothly without twisting your entire hand or lifting your other fingers too far away from the home row.

Top Row Vowels on the Right Hand

Your right hand controls five upper vowels placed across the top row. Reaching inward with your index finger presses ㅛ on the Y key, while reaching straight up with the index finger presses ㅕ on the U key. Your middle finger reaches up to ㅑ on the I key. Your ring finger moves up to ㅐ on the O key, and your little finger reaches up to ㅔ on the P key. Combining these vowels with consonants opens up a wealth of everyday words.

Technique for Smooth Upward Reaches

  • Keep your wrists steady and let your fingers extend upward without floating.
  • Do not drag your palm across the keyboard when reaching for top row keys.
  • Practice pairs like 가, 바, and 다 to build muscle memory for upward stretches.
  • Aim for equal timing between reaching upward and pressing home row keys.

Mastering both the home row and the top row gives you access to almost all the core consonants and vowels needed in day-to-day Korean communication. Use the drills below to train your fingers to reach upward accurately without looking down at the keyboard.
